tbh ily (Kidswaste Remix) – chet porter

May 2, 2016

Kidswaste

Let’s have something chill today. Kidswaste‘s remix of Chet Porter certainly fits that bill. Starting off with a whisper, this track introduces strings and laidback synths before a relaxed drum roll joins in with sweet male vocals, sung in harmony with a pitched up set of vocals. It’s tentative and sweet and exact. Every note and beat and snap seems chosen to calm and warm the listener. Listen and you’ll see what I mean.

See You – Lope & Kantola

April 18, 2016

Lope & Kantola

Let’s enjoy the warmth this week has brought us and start off with a chill track from Lope & Kantola. Starting off with a relaxed guitar riff, this song builds by adding a chopped vocal sample that develops into the beginnings of lyrics as simple synth chords swell around them. While this track grows into some powerful music, it remains relaxed and groovy. Enjoy the song and enjoy the week!

Leave That Way – RIOT

April 6, 2016

RIOT (Photo by YosiMamia.com)

Celebrating passing 50k likes, RIOT released their latest track for free. It’s a hazy, crazy, lazy track, sweet and strange and entirely beautiful. The track circles around a vocal sample that appears stretched and slow or sped up and pitched, sometimes harmonizing with itself. The track opens with gentle guitar strums and hints of keyboard; when the vocals start it sounds like a warped version of lounge music. Before this can develop into anything too unpleasant, the song shifts, the vocals becoming treble and the future synths wash over everything with hints of wobbles here and there, returning to the guitar strums every so often. This track is a genre bender, going from lounge jazz to downtempo, even hinting at trap. They call it future bass, which puts it under quite a large umbrella, but works for me. Enjoy the vibes!

Emerald (Kuiters Edition) – Halpe

April 4, 2016

Cruising

This may be my new favorite song. It’s chill, downtempo, glitch music, Kuiters intensive reworking of Halpe’s track “Emerald.” Kuiters’ version takes this track into whole new territory. It’s casual cruising music, for leaning back in your seat as the background slides by, your friend by your side, sharing the freedom of travel. Filled with glitchy drips, drops, clicks, claps, and bouncy synths, this track is layered and interesting. This track makes me want to slit my eyes in lazy pleasure and enjoy the moment. I hope you share the satisfaction.

The Circle – Moo Latte

March 2, 2016

Moo Latte

Moo Latte‘s song, “The Circle,” is one of the most peaceful songs I’ve heard in awhile. And that’s saying something since I’ve realized I’ve become more and more drawn to chill-er music. This track is relaxed, soothing, a song to listen to while strolling somewhere. Everything about it is laid back, from its simple, casual thud and hand clap rhythm, to its quiet, crooning vocals. The synths ring like bells, like raindrops creating ripples in a still pond. So if your week is getting you tense and stressed out, I recommend taking three and half minutes out of your day to unwind, unclench, and relax with this song.

Until It Falls Apart – Glimpse & Madi Larson

February 29, 2016

Glimpse

I almost think this song is a dark retelling of Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It.” Glimpse opens the track moody and subdued, bass thrumming  while a simple slow rhythm is rapped out. The bass is leashed, growling loudly every so often to remind us it is out there prowling back and forth. Madi Larson‘s vocals are similarly subdued, bleak and quiet but beautiful. The track features a quiet, mournful movement where the bass backs off and a chopped and screwed vocal track is used to create a sweet little tune before dropping back into the instrumental hook. The hook brings the bass back but also introduces a distant alto synth that reminds me a bit of the Selena Gomez hook. All I know is that I want to start singing “When you’re ready come and get it na na na na…” over it. It’s a magnificent song. You’ll have to tell me if you hear the resemblance as well.

The Light Would Work For You – nimino

February 15, 2016

nimino - Photo taken by Ryan Fitz Photography

nimino has made some of my favorite chill music. It always sounds fresh and unhindered by genre convention. This latest track is one such track. It makes use of a crooning vocal distorted by taking the style of Kanye in “808s and Heartbreaks” to a level where the vocals express emotion without any intelligible words. This song pours out emotion. Opening with simple piano, the stage is set starkly, simply sad, while the vocals add a tender reverberating sense of loss. After nearly two minutes, nimino adds a drum section, a gentle rhythm that buoys the melody without overwhelming it. It’s practically a Drum & Bass rhythm, but more relaxed. Then a hint of tropical flavor is added with a gentle marimba line. It’s a gorgeous, emotional track that invites listeners rather than demands. I hope it starts your week off with a sense of calm.
