Secrets – Ben Maxwell

March 4, 2016

Ben Maxwell

As you probably know by now, I tend to enjoy songs most when they borrow and blend musical elements to make a richer whole. Ben Maxwell has put together a track that tickles that sensibility of mine in a couple different ways. Based around a basic trap rhythm, “Secrets” features chopped vocals that provide an emotional hook without leaving any words behind to lend clearer meaning. It’s a clearly a trap song, but a chill one, drawing on more electro than hip hop. Over two thirds of the way through the track a new synth is pulled out and this track goes from chill trap to a more intense and aggressive version of trap. It’s a surprising move in the song without being musically strange. It fits the name of the song. If it were a theme song for someone, it would highlight curiosity, interest in fun and exploration, with hidden depths of anger or resentment. Listen to the song and enjoy the contrasts.
