Overdose (The Chainsmokers Remix) – Little Daylight

March 14, 2013

First off, if you haven’t listened to Little Daylight’s song “Overdose” yet, do so. I’ll embed the video below so you don’t have to leave the page if you don’t feel like it. Next step, listen to the Chainsmokers‘ official remix of it. These guys put together a catchy dance remix of it. Using progressive house synths, they build an intro to frame the gorgeous vocals from Little Daylight. Then after establishing the song, they chop the vocals up a bit to provide a melodic synth effect, before dropping into some more prog house sounds. The beat drops off and the Chainsmokers chop the vocals in such a way as to provide rhythm and melody, but soon it becomes apparent that the rhythm is designed to match and supplement the beat. It’s a very cool effect and an effective outro. Here’s what the Chainsmokers have to say about their process:

Overdose came about cause we heard Little Daylight’s song at a party & we looked them up and shot them an email & were thrilled when they were into the idea as they were looking for someone to do a more up-tempo remix. So we thought about it & wanted to make the song very warm and with uplifting chords and chop the vocal up a bit and we’ve been really into this indie progressive mesh of sound that drops but is more animated. Then we thought instead of the usual house structure we would do something a bit funkier and keep the song evolving as it unfolds, so it starts out a bit simple with the vocals bleeding in over some warm drums but then end in this entirely different place

They give a funnier account of their process in the description on their SoundCloud page. While you’re at it, give their Facebook Page a “like” and help them reach their goal of 30,000 likes. They say that if they reach that number they’ll release their remix of “Levels”. Having heard this and other remixes of theirs, I can’t wait to hear it. In the meantime, enjoy their stellar remix of “Overdose”.

BONUS: Here’s the music video for Little Daylight’s original track “Overdose”. The track is an indie/alternative pop-rock track that can be simply described as catchy. Or maybe incredibly catchy. You decide by listening to the video below. The video itself is fairly simple, playing with focus and lights in a city. I love the idea of a flashlight rave. I may have to organize one now. Check it out.
