The Protect-IP & Stop Online Piracy Acts WILL Be the End of This Site

November 16, 2011

This is not strictly music-related, but it needs to be said. Two new bills, the Protect-IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act are essentially threatening to censor the internet for American users. This will give the government as well as private corporations the ability to shut down entire sites, even sites like YouTube and Facebook. A video of someone singing a copyrighted song could immediately land them a $5,000 fine. This site, for sure, as well as any other site that posts even potentially copywritten material will be shut down, and I could be potentially put in jail for posting mashups that include copywritten songs. For up to five years.

It is absolutely essential that these bills do not pass. They will permanently cripple the greatest assimilation of knowledge in the history of the world, and one which has not even begun to hit its potential. It will put hundreds of thousands of people out of a job.

The least you can do is to go to http://americancensorship.org/ and email your congressional representative. If you can, also send a letter or call your congress member and let them know that this is unacceptable.
