Chicago – Lucy Wainwright Roche

September 27, 2011

I have been busy busy busy! I’m sorry there was no mashups post this past week. It will happen this week. I’ve just been all over the place. I am procrastinating on some homework right now to post this. But it will make me feel better and that’s what counts. One of the places I was the other day was seeing Lucy Wainwright Roche give a concert. If you don’t know where she’s coming from, here’s a quick rundown: her mother is Suzzy Roche of the Roches, her father is Loudon Wainwright III, and her brother is Rufus Wainwright. Most of her family are musicians of some sort. She is a folk artist who has toured with such names as the Indigo Girls, Girlyman, and Brandi Carlile. I’ve seen her play in Oberlin at least four times. Her shows are always unbelievably fun. Aside from the music (which I’ll get to) her shows inevitably include fun, silly, and awkward anecdotes that keep me laughing almost as much as listening. She loves it when crowds are willing to engage with her, which makes the atmosphere of the show almost that of friends hanging out. Her music is simple (several times she has made jokes that she wrote a song too hard for her to play on guitar) but beautiful. Her vocals are overwhelmingly powerful in person. After the show I asked if I could blog a song of hers and she said, yeah, of course. If this comes up on your Google Alerts and you didn’t mean “free download” when you said “blog” then do tell me, Lucy! This song is one of my favorites. None of her recordings quite capture the power of her vocal presence that dominates her performance in person. But this one is gorgeous and always makes me a little homesick. If you want a chance to hear her vocals at full power, check out her tour schedule. She came out with an album last year entitled, “Lucy” which is available on iTunes, Amazon, and BandCamp. Check it out.

BONUS: I also wanted to post her version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “America” but didn’t want to put up multiple tracks up so here’s a stream-only version. Enjoy!

  1. I couldn’t tell if my comments got posted. So, to repeat, we saw Lucy last night in Evanston (Chicago area) and it was wonderful. Thanks for encouraging us to go. She *does* have a great stage presence!

    • Excellent! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
