Suddenly Mashups. Everywhere. XX

June 17, 2011

Number twenty! Alright! Happy Friday folks! I hope you’re all feeling better than me, as I’m living through some unpleasant non-specific virus. It’s mashup time and since I’ve been away for a couple weeks I have a pile of awesome mashups waiting in the queue. Ready? Let’s go.

Wait. Two mashups from DJ Earworm in as many weeks? That’s unheard of! Not that I’m complaining; his mashups are always perfect. I just hope he keeps it up. Of course this was another commissioned mashup, this time a mashup of the fifteen artists performing at the Capital FM Summertime Ball. Earworm draws from nineteen tracks to bring this together. That’s probably why his mashups are always so wonderful. He’s not attached to one single song, but instead works in all the elements that fit with his wholistic vision of a song. I’m just glad LMFAO is so prominent. Enjoy it!

Mashup-Germany has been busy while I’ve been away too. There were several mashups I had to pick from to include in this post. This is my current favorite. It’s very sweet and edges toward cheesy but I like it a lot. What with the piano riff in this I’m surprised Stilller didn’t work Vanessa Carlton in, haha. But the choice for chorus and hook is perfect. See (or, well, listen) for yourself.

As a young, frequently countercultural, person I really appreciate the lyrics to this track. The rude chorus which is part of the original rap song seems strangely out of place when compared with the verbose verses but maintains a rebellious almost impotent rage. Of course DJ Schmolli decided to mash it up. His mashups are most consistently different from the vast majority of mashups which focus on pop. This one is the most mainstream sounding mashup I’ve heard him make in awhile. But the choice of songs is undeniably him. Check it out.

Remember Kap Slap‘s mashup from yesterday’s dubstep post? Well here is 3lau‘s remix of the mashup. It took me a little longer to like this version but now I’m really hooked. This version is just as fabulous as the original. This version gets into the act faster and harder than the original. Enjoy!

This is a bit different. We’re going post-dubstep here folks. James Blake is renowned for his fascinating experimental synth music. Drake, not so much. But their names fit rather nicely, so it was fated. Unlike the Grey Album (a similar album mash), which focused on Jay-Z’s work as the popular rap artist over the sometimes experimental Beatles tracks on the White Album, Bombé & Mr. Caribbean takes Drake’s work and chops and screws it to fit with James Blake’s experimentalism. Very cool. Spotted it at Pigeons and Planes. Full album download here. Try it on for size.

Next up is a more normal track from the man Doug Bogan. You have to love the nineties vibe on this one. Definitely a chill mashup. Enjoy.

This one has a double dose of hooks. With Wiz Khalifa’s ultra popular riff for “No Sleep”, the Friendly Giant adds the addictive vocals from Iyaz’s “Replay”. And the two songs fit pretty perfectly which makes it that much more enjoyable to listen to the simple combination and clean production. I always appreciate clean production and so should you. Check it out.
