Fear Not the Dubstep XII

June 16, 2011

Despite getting sick, I’ve managed to pull a dubstep post together. Yeah that’s right, as soon as I get home for the summer I get sick, figures. Anyways this means you have to appreciate my efforts all the more. As usual I found four of these on Earmilk. I need to get more dubstep sources. Once I’m healthy. Why procrastinate today what you could procrastinate next week? Happy Thursday!

To start us off on a good note, here’s a lovely track that has a melodic hook in the vocals that gets torn up by the drop. This remix by Russian Graffiti really turns Phoenix Rudolf‘s soul/R&B/hip-hop vocals into a driving dubstep anthem. Check it out.

Remember how I have a ton of Ellie Goulding remixes? Well this week seems to be the week for collecting Katy Perry remixes. This particular remix by Afsheen really adds a lot of rage (i.e. Skrillex-like sounds, term coined by Sonny Shotz, popularized by Brenton Duvall) to the track which Perry could always use. Enjoy.

So I’m throwing this track on to remember the song, not really to appreciate the song. Isn’t that ironic? No. No it’s not. Look Alanis, the definition of ironic is: “relating to, containing, or constituting irony” or “given to irony”. We need to go deeper! The definition of irony is: “incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result” or “the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning”. Glad I could help. Anyway it’s not a bad remix. Definitely something slower I would play while DJing. Props to PHATCAT.

Ironic (PHATCAT REMIX) – Alanis Morrisette / Or from Mediafire

Let’s relax a little with this jazzy little dubstep remix by the talented Robotic Pirate Monkeys. This is one of the more interesting directions I’ve seen dubstep taken. Remixing Aerosmith, these guys mesh dubstep with cocktail hour jazz with classic rock. Very cool. I keep expecting to hear Eminem come in but that’s just my conditioning. Enjoy.

You know what I need more of? Dubstep email submissions. Come on people! Send me your filth! DISSØLV sent me theirs, and I can’t get enough of it. Hailing from San Francisco, California, the members of DISSØLV make up “an electronic dance music band whose music is symphonic, high energy and psychedelic. They incorporate dubstep, electro, trance and breaks with live instrumentation including violin, guitar, piano and vocals.” On this track they really take Radiohead to town. By keeping the remix slow and lowkey until the end, they really capture the beauty of the song and the drop is unbelievably satisfying. I’m looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future. And if you don’t trust me, Bassnectar reviewed this song, calling it “Powerful and Gorgeous”. Check it out!

Exit Music (DISSØLV RMX) – Radiohead / Or from Mediafire

Here’s another remix that uses sweet vocal hooks to bring together the remix. I have to say I really appreciate the Euro Techno synth line at the softer points of the song. There should be more of that around. Big ups to Shirobon on this track. It’s very catchy, maybe a party starter, and definitely a song to cruise to. Enjoy.

Not Getting Any Better (Shirobon Remix) – InnerPartySystem / Or from Mediafire

So yeah… About that whole Katy Perry remix thing. Wouldn’t you like to try a mashup too? I promise it’s excellent. Kap Slap put it together so of course it fits. Tomorrow I’ll post 3lau‘s remix of it. They collaborated and this blog appreciates that. This song highlights the Katy’s vocals with pretty synths and then breaks down into dubstep, hits some Empire of the Sun, and works its way into Busta Rhymes. If you spot the little Passion Pit sample I’ll give you a gold star. Oh yeah and here’s your requisite Ellie for the day. I hope you rock out to this song like I’ve been.

BONUS: A video that demonstrates the universal appeal of dubstep.
