I’m Only Twenty (Prod. Brenton Duvall) – Sonny Shotz

June 15, 2011

I can’t really describe how pleased I am at this collab. Ok, so Sonny Shotz, of the Dean’s List, rapping on a beat prepared by Brenton Duvall, out of a sample of Frank Ocean. Wow. Where do I start with great that is? If you follow this blog you know how much I love Duvall’s production. And I haven’t talked as much about Frank Ocean but I’m still digging the chill Soul sounds that he comes out with. The Dean’s List is rising fast and I appreciate the genre; the same genre that is populated by groups like Chiddy Bang and Hoodie Allen. This song pulls a soulful (of course) hook from Ocean and keeps it going throughout the whole song. The lyrics are welcome to any twenty-year-olds, just check the title. Apparently Duvall and the Dean’s List toured together, which makes sense for their audience. That’s how they got the idea to do a collab. One day Duvall sends a track over to Shotz and an hour later, we have these lyrics. Talent. Spotted this over at Pigeons and Planes. Also apparently Shotz coined the term “rage” that Duvall likes (think Skrillex). Check it out, it’s excellent.
