Synths and Wobs

February 24, 2011

I’ve been wanting to throw up a couple of dubstep and electro/house tracks over the past few days so I think I’m going to combine the small posts and make a greater whole. What do you think? Good end result?

First up, a party pleaser for sure. A danceable Ke$ha remix. Now let me tell you, as someone who likes to think of himself as a guy with fairly good music taste, I have trouble listening to Ke$ha because of the painful mainstream-ness of it. To make up for it I listen to mashups and remixes. There are many pop songs that I literally do not know in their original format… Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. But I really like this track. It has enough electro and dubstep (not to mention pop) influences to meld into many party moods. Definitely coming out at my next party.

Blow (Cirkut Remix) – Ke$ha / Or from Mediafire

Next up, a Lykke Li remix. Now most of the time I’m really unimpressed with remixes of Lykke Li, but in this case I’m a fan. What a drop, right? A real stomper of a dubstep track. Definitely worthy of playing at a party. This track is also coming out at my next party.

Here’s another popular track remixed. Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” has more remixes of it than… than… than Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You”! But this one may be my favorite. It enhances the original rather than completely changing the track or laying down new verses. With well placed wobs this track rocks hard. Not sure if this is real dance party material but it’s a hell of a remix.

Black and Yellow (The Rockstars Dubstep Remix) – Wiz Khalifa / Not from Mediafire (remixes are fair use dammit!)

And here’s another popular track remixed in the dubstep tradition. This track is a bit older but that makes the remix that much sweeter. Coldplay’s “Fix You” is given an echoey beginning as is proper in dubstep and gradually builds , like the original, to a far gentler drop than you might expect. With higher synths than expected this track really feels ethereal with the deep wobs more of a background than a spotlit event. The remix keeps the guitar drop from the original song pretty much as is, then augments it slightly with some higher synths and deeper bass. It’s not as wild a track as I might hope for but it’s really quite good.

Fix You (Datsik Remix) – Coldplay / Or from Mediafire

Next, a Skrillex remix. There is no way you can go wrong throwing down a Skrillex track so check this out. Traditional techno synths build to a distorted Skrillexian symphony. How can you really describe Skrillex’s manic chaos? Seriously, if you have a good way to describe it, share, because I have trouble summing it up. Anyways. Very cool song.

And now for something a little different. With a lovely traditional eastern opening, this track has a drop to a hip hop feel, which is swiftly joined by some indie falsetto vocals, and soon after given a dose of dubstep on the chorus. I’m digging the sheer quirkiness of this song. I’m a big fan of the union of genres as my love of mashups will attest to, and this really delivers.

Ariel – Stateless / Or from Mediafire

Finally I’m going to end with a lovely remix of the CocoRosie song “Werewolf.” Scaw posted an Omega remix the other day which made me remember this track. It’s an eerie song already which makes it a prime candidate for a dubstep remix, and this is a great one. I really like the riff Omega gets going once the wobs drop. Check it out.

  1. This looks awesome. I’ve been listening to a ton of dubstep and trance recently; this post looks like it’s gonna give me some good new stuff. Now I just need a spare few minutes to listen to it all…

    • awesome. I should post more dubstep. I just feel like it has too big a presence on the site if I do a bunch of individual posts so I’m considering lump posts like this

      • Yeah, that’d be sweet. I’m in love with that Black & Yellow Remix… so good.

      • yeah. not sure I’m gonna make it a weekly thing but I think it should be a series

  2. Lump posts like this are a great thing and you should indeed make it a series.
